Following their essential editions of the dystopian classic, Fahrenheit 451, and the science-fiction and horror short-story collections, The Martian Chronicles and The Illustrated Man, The Folio Society has now turned its attention to Ray Bradbury’s dark fantasy masterpiece, Something Wicked This Way Comes, for the fourth entry in its ever-increasing Bradbury collection.

Considered by Bradbury himself to be his best loved book, and a direct influence on so many of the great fantasy and horror authors that followed, including the likes of Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, and Goosebumps creator, R.L. Stine, Something Wicked This Way Comes is a thrilling and beautifully crafted slice of fantasy horror, expertly blending the two genres, fully immersing the reader in its unsettling carnivalesque world, and showcasing the author at his poetic and atmospheric best.

Inspired by a real-life encounter with carnival magician ‘Mr. Electrico’ when Bradbury was just 12 years old (an encounter which would also inspire several of the author’s other works, including The Illustrated Man), Something Wicked This Way Comes is the tale of young adolescent best friends William Halloway and Jim Nightshade who find themselves allured by a mysterious traveling carnival, ‘Cooger & Dark’s Pandemonium Shadow Show’, tempted by the ominous carnival leader ‘Mr. Dark’, and caught up in the eerie and nightmarish world of the carnival one week before Halloween.

It is fair to say that travelling circuses, carnivals and funfairs have given writers and filmmakers a real wealth of inspiration over the years, and there has always been something strange and utterly fascinating about the way they come and go, the entertainment they provide and the often unsettling experiences they offer (halls of mirrors, mazes, ghost trains, etc). Bradbury rich and captivating novel captures it all brilliantly, evoking the various sights and smells, the magic, the terror, the eeriness, and the excitement in expert fashion.

Brighton-based illustrator Tim McDonagh complements Bradbury’s compelling text with a series of exceptional artworks that both enhance the disturbing tone of the book and convey the gaudy and garish hues of the circus.

Frank Skinner introduces this new edition with a sharp and passionate examination of Bradbury’s great novel, and it isn’t difficult to understand why Skinner lists the book as amongst his favourites.

The Folio Society has produced yet another work of great beauty and quality, and for Bradbury fans and newcomers alike, this is most definitely an edition you need to be adding to your bookshelves!
