The British Library‘s acclaimed Food Season is set to return for its eighth edition this summer, offering audiences a rich programme of conversations, tastings and cultural events that place food at the centre of discussions around history, identity, creativity and sustainability.
Running from 13 June until 2 July 2026, the festival has become a major fixture in the UK’s food and culture calendar, attracting celebrated chefs, broadcasters, historians, authors and campaigners from around the world.
Drawing inspiration from the British Library’s vast collections of cookery books, manuscripts and food writing, the programme continues its tradition of connecting historical perspectives with contemporary food debates.
Food Season Big Weekend Opens The Festival
The 2026 programme launches with the Food Season Big Weekend on 13 and 14 June, transforming the British Library into a hub of culinary discussion and exploration.
Visitors can attend a diverse range of talks examining food’s relationship with politics, identity, literature, sustainability and cultural heritage.
Highlights include discussions hosted by the influential food publication Vittles, explorations of Irish food culture and conversations about Palestinian culinary traditions and resistance.
Major Names Across Food, History And Culture Join The Line-Up
One of the biggest draws this year is the appearance of broadcaster and historian Mary Beard, who will join Charlotte Higgins for a live recording of their podcast Instant Classics. The event will explore how people ate, celebrated and socialised in ancient Pompeii, offering fascinating insights into daily life across the Roman Empire.
Food critic Jay Rayner will chair a discussion examining the enduring influence of Anthony Bourdain on food writing, travel storytelling and professional kitchen culture.
Elsewhere, actor Simon Russell Beale will delve into food in Shakespearean England, while River Café co-founder Ruthie Rogers reflects on her remarkable culinary career and the challenges of sustaining one of Britain’s most influential restaurants.
Neneh Cherry And Andi Oliver Reunite For Special Closing Event
Closing the season on 2 July, long-time friends and collaborators Neneh Cherry and Andi Oliver will discuss four decades of shared experiences across music, food, family and culture.
The conversation promises to explore the role food has played throughout their lives, from modest home cooking to global culinary influences spanning Sweden, West Africa, Jamaica, Britain and the United States.
Sustainability, Identity And The Future Of Food
A recurring theme throughout the British Library Food Season 2026 is the future of food and how individuals, businesses and communities can respond to environmental and social challenges.
Panels will examine topics including palm oil production, seaweed as a sustainable food source, school meals, food systems innovation and the wider impact of consumer choices.
Sessions featuring industry leaders, campaigners and entrepreneurs will provide audiences with opportunities to engage in discussions shaping the future of food.
Celebrating Culinary Storytelling
The festival will also shine a spotlight on the power of food narratives through discussions on cookery writing, food photography and fiction inspired by culinary experiences.
Alongside the live events programme, the British Library Food Season Awards will return, recognising excellence in narrative cookery writing, exhibitions, emerging talent and individuals driving positive change across food and drink.
