Tip of the Tongue: Reflections on Language and Meaning

by Peter Brook

Publication Date: 10 August, 2017

Leading theatre publisher Nick Hern Books has confirmed that Tip of the Tongue: Reflections on Language and Meaning, the latest book from legendary theatre-maker Peter Brook, will be published on 10 August, 2017.

In Tip of the Tongue, Peter Brook takes a charming, playful and wise look at topics such as the subtle yet telling differences between French and English, and the many levels on which we can appreciate the works of Shakespeare.

Brook also revisits his seminal concept of the ‘empty space’, considering how theatre – and the world – have changed over the span of his long and distinguished career.

Threaded throughout with intimate and revealing stories from Brook’s own life, Tip of the Tongue is a short but sparkling gift from one of the greatest artists of our time.

Nick Hern, Publisher at Nick Hern Books:

‘Ever since his famous 1970 ‘white box’ Dream, I have been somewhat in awe of Peter Brook, a feeling that hardly faded even when I became his publisher in 1988. Often his books appeared first in the US, but with The Quality of Mercy in 2013 and, now, Tip of the Tongue, I have had the enormous privilege of originating the books with him. Tip of the Tongue is a charming constellation of slivers of wisdom and humour, very much from the perspective of a 92-year-old artist of genius who has seen much and achieved more than most.’

Tip of the Tongue is published in paperback, priced at £7.99, on 3 August, 2017
