Latest Review – Motel One Vienna-Staatsoper, Vienna

Housed in an historic and listed turn-of-the-century building in the heart of downtown Vienna, the clean and stylish Motel One Vienna-Staatsoper offers guests a cosy and affordable stay in the heart of Innere Stadt, the first and most prestigious district in the city.

Perfect for tourists and businesspeople alike, the hotel is enviably situated right in the heart of the city centre and just moments away from the iconic Vienna State Opera House, from which the hotel takes its name.

The 400-room hotel first opened its doors in early 2015, uniting two historic, adjoining six-storey buildings which had previously been utilised as office spaces, and giving the budget design hotel chain a fourth, individually-designed location in the Austrian capital.

Approaching from the Operngasse, you are immediately struck by the impressive architecture of this beautifully preserved building; imposing and magnificently kept. Entering into the foyer you are again met with striking design features: original stone floors, oak parquet and bright, ornamental plasterwork, with the brand’s signature turquoise interiors really popping against the white plaster and muted tones of the furniture.

Behind the check in desk, a large feature wall highlighting the namesake Opera House and featuring dancers in balletic poses. Hanging from the ceiling, pendant lights dressed in net tutus to further accentuate the theatrical connections.

For our visit, we stayed in a standard double room (“The One”) on the second floor, with views out over the Operngasse. The room itself was really lovely and very modern in its design. The fresh, clean, white walls and bedding were a great contrast to the striking turquoise of the plush, black-out curtains and cushions. The striking globe lampshade above the bed is also a standout design touch.

The rooms themselves are incredibly stylish and the beds and pillows are exceptionally comfortable, though they are on the basic side. Storage is minimal, there is no room safe, and there are no tea and coffee making facilities. Tech wise, the room does have a 40-inch LOEWE TV on a tilt bracket, with complimentary guest Wi-fi available throughout the hotel, and plenty of sockets and charging points.

The granite bathroom is again on the compact side but the rain shower is excellent, and there’s a large mirror with hairdryer by the sink.

The hotel offers a good continental buffet breakfast with a great selection of breads and pastries, as well as meats, cheeses and salad options. There are no hot, à la carte options available but there is plenty available from the buffet as is.

Seating wraps around the bar area and into the breakfast section, though with this being a prime business hotel, it can get very busy and crowded at peak times, so it is advised to get down early or wait until after the peak rush.

There is no restaurant on site, though bar snacks (grilled sandwiches, etc) are available 24/7 from the bar area and ordered to the room.

It is worth noting that this hotel is an outstanding budget option for anyone looking for a central base for exploring the city, though if you are looking for a slightly more premium option with more facilities and amenities on site, then it may not be for you. There is no restaurant on site (though bar snacks are available 24/7), no spa or wellness centre and no parking is available.

From a design and ambience standpoint, Motel One Vienna-Staatsoper feels very much like a premium hotel, just with a budget price tag. If you aren’t someone who needs the additional facilities and amenities then look no further than Motel One.

Motel One Vienna-Staatsoper is located just steps away from the iconic Vienna State Opera House, making it perfect for anyone making a visit to the opera or ballet whilst visiting Vienna. Just a short walk past the Opera House takes you to the Albertina Museum and the Hofburg, then on to many of the top landmarks in the capital. The Kärntner Straße shopping street starts next to the State Opera, and the Karlsplatz Underground Station is just 100-metres away from the hotel. A really prime location that puts guests right in the heart of the city.

Location, location, location is the real selling point with Motel One Vienna-Staatsoper, and for the price, you will really struggle to find another high quality hotel that can compete given the standard of the property. If you are looking for a great base with lovely rooms, and in very close proximity to some of the top landmarks in the city, then look no further. Outstanding value for money given its prime spot in Vienna.
