New stage adaptation of ‘THE GANGS OF NEW YORK’ to open Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre 2024 season!

Storyhouse in Chester has announced its summer lineup for the Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre 2024 season, which will open with a thrilling new adaptation of THE GANGS OF NEW YORK, based on the iconic book by Herbert Asbury featuring stories from the wicked and notorious Five Points neighbourhood in lower Manhattan.

A riveting exploration of love, betrayal, and power in a city in flux. This new adaptation by Keiran Lynn draws from a compelling non-fiction account, against a pulse-pounding original score, revealing the wicked lives of those who carved their destinies in New York’s most notorious neighbourhood.

Brought to life by director John Young, known for his acclaimed productions Merry Wives of Windsor (2021) and Romeo and Juliet (2023), the production will run from 19 July to 31 August 2024.

Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre audiences can also look forward to an hilarious staging of Oscar Wilde‘s timeless classic, THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, which runs from 9 August to 1 September. This beloved comedy of manners promises to enchant theatergoers with its wit, charm, and enduring humour directed by Natasha Rickman (Little Women 2022).

Join the hilarious escapades of Jack, an orphan with a penchant for partying in London under the guise of his fictional brother, Earnest. Alongside him is the irreverent Algernon, equally entangled in the web of playful deception. As the characters navigate a world of mistaken identities, societal expectations, and uproarious humour, Wilde’s brilliant satire comes to life under the stars.

For families seeking a magical experience, Storyhouse presents THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ Walkabout Theatre Experience, running from 27 July to 22 August, offering an immersive journey into the enchanting world of Dorothy, Toto, and their friends.

Young audience members are in for a treat as the show parades through Grosvenor Park meeting a cast of characters along the way, concluding with a magical finale in the open-air theatre. Alex McGonagall will direct.
