The Metropolitan Opera‘s new production of Wagner‘s ‘Der Fliegende Holländer‘ (The Flying Dutchman) – directed by François Girard and conducted by Valery Gergiev – will be screened live in cinemas across the world on Saturday 14 March 2020 as part of The Met: Live in HD cinema series.
The great bass-baritone Sir Bryn Terfel returns to the Met Opera for the first time since 2012 to sing the title role of the cursed sea captain doomed to sail the open ocean for eternity.
German soprano Anja Kampe makes her Met debut as the devoted Senta, whose selfless love is what the Dutchman seeks; bass Franz-Josef Selig is her father Daland; and tenor Sergey Skorokhodov is her deserted former lover, Erik.
With sweeping sets by John Macfarlane, Girard’s new production turns the Met stage into a rich, layered tableau reminiscent of a vast oil painting.
