2019 has been named as the Year of Discovery by Visit Wales, inviting travellers to discover Wales in a new light, and to celebrate, Nanteos Mansion, Aberystwyth has announced a new ‘Discovery Package‘ for guests to explore the local area.
There are a number of themes during the Year of Discovery, including Journeys of Discovery, Discover Culture and Discover Landscape.
From April to June the theme is Discover Adventure, which includes encouraging adventure outdoors, stargazing and nature trails.
The Discovery Package includes a two night stay, bike hire to explore the local area, a packed lunch to enjoy, a cream tea for two, breakfasts on both mornings, and 25% off when dining at yr Eos restaurant during the stay.
The hotel has dog-friendly and family rooms for larger groups.
Guests can use the hotel’s bikes or bring their own to explore the Ystwyth Trail, a 21 mile bike route directly from the hotel which follows the old Aberystwyth to Cardiff decommissioned train line. The route takes in Strata Florida, a former Cistercian monastery. The Nanteos Cup, said to have been used at the Last Supper, came into the possession of the Powell family of Nanteos Mansion, passed to them by the monks from Strata Florida.
For wildlife fans, Bwlch Nant yr Arian has been a red kite feeding station since 1999, established to protect the small number of red kites in the area. Since then, the numbers have increased significantly and visitors can see red kites being fed on a daily basis.
The Barcud Trail at Bwlch Nant yr Arian offers a gentle stroll around the lake and gives visitors stunning views of the birds, or there is a bird hide overlooking the feeding area. There can be up to 150 birds at any one time, sometimes far more during the winter months. These are mainly local birds from within a 10 mile radius of the Visitor Centre.
For night owls, the Nanteos estate is a perfect location for stargazing. The countryside location has very little light pollution, and for those keen to experience dark skies, the Elan Valley – a designated dark sky area – is approximately a 70 minute drive from the hotel.
Built in 1738, Nanteos is a beautiful 22-bedroom Georgian house located on a 30-acre country estate, five minutes from Aberystwyth.
The 30 acres at Nanteos consist of woodland and private parkland, the remains of the original walled garden, a lake, nature trails and an unusual pet cemetery dating back several hundred years.
The discovery break is available until 31st October 2019.
