Verdi’s ‘Rigoletto’ to open Scottish Opera’s 2018/19 Season

Next month, Scottish Opera will open its 2018/19 Season with a revival of award-winning director Matthew Richardson‘s powerful 2011 production of Verdi’s masterpiece, Rigolettodesigned by Olivier Award-winning designer Jon Morrell.

Rigoletto will open at the Theatre Royal Glasgow on 18 October 2018, and tour to Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Inverness.

Rumon Gamba conducts a talented cast including internationally-acclaimed baritone Aris Argiris as Rigoletto, Lina Johnson as Gilda, Adam Smith as the Duke of Mantua, and David Shipley as Sparafucile. The cast will also include former Scottish Opera Emerging Artist Sioned Gwen Davies as Maddalena, Stephen Gadd as Count Monterone and Dingle Yandell as Count Ceprano. They are joined by Scottish Opera Emerging Artists Alexey Gusev, Lucy Anderson and Bethan Langford.

Set in a dark and dangerous underworld where cruelty and inhumanity are rife—and women are objects merely to be played with and discarded—it tells the tragic tale of seduction, revenge and a father’s suffocating love for his only daughter with a clarity that is completely compelling and utterly heartbreaking.

Matthew Richardson said:

‘Rigoletto is one of Verdi’s most vivid and exciting operas. It moves at a fast pace and this production aims to bring out the helter-skelter of its emotional highs and lows. I’m looking forward to spending time with it again and with our great cast.’
