TOMA & COE launches ‘Wonderful Wine Weekend’ tours in Andalucia

Specialist boutique Spanish tour consultant, TOMA & COE, has now announced the launch of Wonderful Wine Weekends, a brand new tour for 2018 which will see travellers exploring the undiscovered boutique bodegas of the beautiful Andalucia.

Offered on selected long weekend dates in May, September and November 2018, these three-night Thursday to Sunday tours will start and end in Malaga and cover TOMA & COE’s favourite, off-the-beaten-track wineries in Andalucia, including delicious gourmet food, fabulous accommodation, stunning scenery, comfortable transportation from hotel to winery, and time out to relax too.

Taking in five small family-owned bodegas in central Andalucía, itinerary highlights include:

A visit to the wine region of Sierra de Malaga; this Denominacion de Origen (D.O.) is known for its sweet Moscatel wine.

The vineyards of the hilly Axarquia region, where the two wineries are located, are picturesquely terraced on steep slopes, with the grapes picked traditionally by hand and carried by donkeys

The tour heads to DO Montilla-Moriles in Cordoba province.

This region produces fortified white wines known as the “cousins” of sherry, as they share the same dry climate, chalky albariza soil and solera aging and blending system, although Pedro Ximenez grapes are used rather than palomino.

Amontillado, a type of sherry, gets its name from Montilla.

The tour heads west to the Sierra de Ronda, part of the D.O. Sierra de Malaga, known for its superb tintos (red wines) to visit one of Spain’s smallest vineyards, at just one hectare, and another in a converted 16th-century monastery, where the wine barrels are stored in the chapel.

Thursday and Friday nights are spent at the Parador de Antequera, a modern, comfortable hotel in this charming, historic town, offering superb views of famous rock formations La Peña de los Enamorados and La Cabeza del Indio, while on Saturday guests stay at the Hotel Reina Victoria in Ronda, a spectacularly-situated period gem over 100 years old, built by English railway entrepreneur Mr Henderson, and recently refurbished.

Wonderful Wine Weekend Tours will run from 17 – 20 May, 20 – 23 Sept and 8 – 11 Nov 2018.

The tour includes all winery visits and wine-tastings at five independent wineries, three nights’ accommodation, two lunches and three dinners with non-alcoholic beverages and beer, airport transfers, all transport between visits, local guides and entrance fees. Additional hotel nights, flights, and gratuities are not included.
