The Royal Exchange Theatre announces Autumn/Winter 2017 Season

The Royal Exchange Theatre has today unveiled full details of its 2017 Autumn/Winter season, which opens on 14 September with a new production of Thornton Wilder‘s OUR TOWN.

A hugely significant piece of 20th Century drama, Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize winning exploration of human existence, OUR TOWN, opens the Royal Exchange’s autumn/winter season.

Manchester is OUR TOWN and the people of the city sit at the heart of the action in this classic play redefined for now.

On this intimate in-the-round stage director Sarah Frankcom creates a town bursting with the intricate detail of life to recount the unique stories of everyday people. Designed by Fly Davis the production opens on the 14 September and runs until 14 October.

PARLIAMENT SQUARE

A searingly powerful new play PARLIAMENT SQUARE carefully and compassionately explores the power of political protest.

Selected for a Judges Award in the Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting 2015 writer James Fritz examines the impact and fall out of a single, selfless act of protest.

Directed by Jude Christian PARLIAMENT SQUARE questions the nature of extreme demonstration, asking where the line falls between complete commitment and dangerous obsession.

This compelling World Premiere is a co-production with The Bush Theatre and will run in the Theatre from 18 – 28 Octoberbefore transferring to London.

A free-spirited, gloriously rude, take-no-prisoners blast of a show with a soundtrack to die for.

The World Premiere of Chris Goode’s stage adaptation of JUBILEE Derek Jarman’s iconic film, invites young punks, old punks, and anyone who’s ever wanted to set the world on fire to the Royal Exchange 40 years after the film was originally created.

Original film cast member and legendary punk warrior Toyah Willcox will lead an electrifying cast as JUBILEE is remixed for the social and political turmoil of 2017. A co-production with Chris Goode & Company this riot of a show will run from 2 – 18 November.

GUYS AND DOLLS

A musical fable of Broadway based on the story and characters of Damon Runyon

When the stakes are high the bets get even higher – Damon Runyon’s infamous stories of the New York underworld capture the allure of secrecy and the romance of living on the edge.

This Christmas the musical fable GUYS AND DOLLS is transported up-town where the seductive sounds of jazz and blues spark and crackle in the lives of street-wise hustlers.

This co-production with Talawa Theatre Company sees director Michael Buffong shift the action of this classic musical to the streets of Harlem during one of New York City’s most significant cultural awakenings.

With choreography from Kenrick ‘H2O’ Sandy GUYS AND DOLLS bursts onto the stage this Christmas from 2 December – 27 January 2018.
