Having premiered in Tokyo earlier this month to favourable critical reviews, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, the follow up to 2014’s critically acclaimed, box-office juggernaut Guardians of the Galaxy, officially arrives in cinemas and IMAX across the UK this Friday.
Having grossed a total of $773.3 million at the worldwide box office, Guardians of the Galaxy became both the third highest-grossing film of 2014 (behind Transformers: Age of Extinction and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies) and the third highest-grossing film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (behind The Avengers and Iron Man 3), later moving down to fifth place following the releases of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Age of Ultron.
A few weeks back, the film’s opening weekend projection was thought to be around $150 million, but with Deadline.com now predicting the film could well match the $179.1 million total opening weekend gross set by Captain America: Civil War (currently the third-highest for a Marvel film), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is certainly on course to be one of the year’s highest grossing motion pictures, though it faces stiff competition from the likes of The Fate of the Furious, Beauty and the Beast and Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi.
Set to backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 continues The Guardians’ adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the Galaxy, fighting to keep their newly formed band together as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s true parentage.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 sees Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper reprising their celebrated roles from the first film, with James Gunn also returning to write and direct the film. Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, Sean Gunn, Tommy Flanagan, Laura Haddock and Kurt Russell complete the supporting cast.
