Rare Giants presents 50th anniversary screening of ‘In Cold Blood’

Rare Giants are proud to present a special 50th anniversary screening of Richard Brooks’ In Cold Blood, in a stunning new 4K restoration from Park Circus.

Presented as part of SHU Fest, in collaboration with Sheffield Hallam University, the ‘Free Entry’ screening will take place at 7pm on Monday 6 March at The Void, Sheffield Hallam. No tickets will be required but in the event of reaching capacity – entry will be on a first come, first served basis.

Adapted from Truman Capote’s best seller, a breakthrough narrative account of real-life crime and punishment, the film adaptation became equally chilling in the hands of writer-director Richard Brooks.

Cast for their unsettling resemblances to the killers they play, Robert Blake and Scott Wilson give authentic, unshowy performances as Perry Smith and Dick Hickock, who in 1959 murdered a family of four in Kansas during a botched robbery.

Brooks brings a detached, documentary-like starkness to this uncompromising view of an American tragedy and its aftermath; at the same time, stylistically In Cold Blood is a filmmaking masterclass, with clinically precise editing, beautiful black-and-white cinematography by the great Conrad Hall, and a menacing jazz score by Quincy Jones.

Rare Giants Co-founder Ryan Finnigan said:

Film restoration is important for art and culture internationally, and we feel it’s vital to share these restorations with the local community through accessible screenings. Our screenings will be programmed to encourage conversations around art and its themes, and we look forward to engaging with diverse audiences.
