‘ANNIE’ Returns to Broadway for Spectacular 50th Anniversary Production in 2027

The beloved musical is set for a major new chapter, with Oh, Mary! director Sam Pinkleton bringing fresh theatrical energy to a legendary Broadway favourite

A spectacular new 50th Anniversary production of the beloved, Tony Award-winning musical classic ANNIE will premiere on Broadway in Fall 2027, fifty years after its historic Broadway debut transformed American musical theatre forever.

This landmark new production will be directed by Tony Award winner Sam Pinkleton (Oh, Mary!; The Rocky Horror Show), whose visionary theatrical storytelling and celebrated work on Broadway and off have established him as one of the leading directors of his generation.

Under Pinkleton’s direction, ANNIE will retain the heart, optimism, and timeless spirit that have made it a cultural touchstone, while offering a fresh theatrical perspective for a new generation of theatergoers.

Pinkleton said:

“If you ask any of my closest friends what I love more than anything on the planet, everyone will have the same answer: Annie. Annie is everything I love about New York City: gutsy, fearless, and funny as hell. It’s a perfectly constructed musical comedy that my collaborators and I will run toward with joy and abandon – with open hearts and total adoration for this legendary show that has made generations fall in love with musicals.”

Since opening on Broadway in 1977 (and 7 Tony Awards later, including Best Musical), ANNIE has become part of the cultural fabric of America. Featuring one of the most celebrated scores in Broadway history, the musical has been seen by tens of millions worldwide, translated into dozens of languages, adapted for film and television, and embraced across generations.

ANNIE, featuring music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin, and a book by Thomas Meehan, opened on Broadway at the Alvin Theatre (now the Neil Simon Theatre) on April 21, 1977.

Nominated for 11 Tony Awards at the 1977 Tony Awards, the production won seven, including Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical, Best Actress in a Musical (Dorothy Loudon), Best Choreography, Best Scenic Design, and Best Costume Design.
