Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie will celebrate its 10th anniversary in January 2027 after welcoming 7.4 million people to more than 6,400 concerts and events since opening, cementing its status as one of Europe’s leading concert venues.
Ten years after opening its doors on 11 January 2017, the spectacular concert hall in Hamburg’s harbour is preparing for a major anniversary season celebrating its musical, architectural and cultural impact.
The landmark venue has welcomed 7.4 million visitors to concerts and events, while a further 29.5 million people have visited the Plaza, its public viewing platform 37 metres above ground.

Elbphilharmonie Marks 10 Years In Hamburg
The anniversary season begins in September 2026, bringing together internationally recognised orchestras, composers and performers across an ambitious programme that reflects the Elbphilharmonie’s broad musical identity.
Since opening, the venue has developed a reputation for combining musical excellence with discovery and experimentation. Alongside the classical repertoire, its programme encompasses jazz, global music, pop, electronic music and contemporary music.
The Elbphilharmonie has also provided an important platform for new work. During its first decade, the venue presented 130 world premieres, equivalent to approximately one every four weeks.

Seven Leading US Orchestras Arrive In Hamburg
One of the major highlights of the 2026/27 anniversary season will see seven leading US orchestras perform in Hamburg from 1 September 2026, giving audiences the opportunity to experience 13 concerts.
The programme includes the New York Philharmonic, returning to the Elbphilharmonie for the first time since 2017.
The international programme continues with musician, composer and curator Rhiannon Giddens, who will explore the global roots of American musical culture through her five-day Reflektor festival.
Meanwhile, Elbphilharmonie Visions will focus on contemporary orchestral music while connecting music with contemporary art through an exhibition by Swiss artist Zimoun in the Recital Hall.

Beethoven, John Adams & John Coltrane Celebrated
The anniversary programme also puts the spotlight on several influential composers and musical figures.
Birthday celebrations will include programmes dedicated to John Adams, Steve Reich and John Coltrane, while a dedicated Beethoven Year will feature complete cycles of the composer’s piano sonatas, piano concertos and string quartets.
The season will subsequently broaden its international perspective with projects exploring the music of Lebanon, alongside Sasha Waltz’s Reflektor festival, as well as performances from artists including Angélique Kidjo, Youssou N’Dour, Sophie Hunger, Dianne Reeves and the Punch Brothers.

Elbphilharmonie Anniversary Concert On 11 January 2027
The centrepiece of the celebrations will take place on 11 January 2027, exactly ten years after the Elbphilharmonie officially opened.
The NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, conducted by Alan Gilbert, will perform a major gala concert alongside Hamburg band MEUTE.
The anniversary concert will be attended by guests from the worlds of politics and society and will form the highlight of the venue’s extensive anniversary celebrations.
Two days later, Ensemble Resonanz will mark the anniversary of the Elbphilharmonie’s Recital Hall.

An Architectural Landmark For Hamburg
The Elbphilharmonie’s influence extends well beyond its programme of concerts.
Positioned on the River Elbe, the building connects Hamburg’s history as a major port city with its identity as a modern and international cultural destination.
A decade after its opening, the Elbphilharmonie has become an established symbol of Hamburg. Its combination of architectural ambition, musical diversity and international programming has helped transform perceptions of the city as a cultural destination.
With its 10th anniversary season, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg is continuing that approach, bringing together world-class orchestras, contemporary artists, new music and global musical traditions.
For Hamburg, the anniversary represents more than a celebration of a concert hall. It marks ten years of an institution that has helped define the city’s modern cultural identity and established the Elbphilharmonie as an internationally recognised destination for music.
The Elbphilharmonie Hamburg 10th Anniversary celebrations are now underway, culminating in the anniversary gala concert on 11 January 2027.
