London’s West End has been transformed into a vibrant tribute to Frida Kahlo as ¡Frida Icónica! takes over Carnaby Street, coinciding with the opening of Frida: The Making of an Icon at Tate Modern.
Stretching across one of the capital’s most famous shopping streets, the striking public art installation celebrates the life, creativity and enduring cultural influence of one of the world’s most recognisable artists.
Running until 31 August, the immersive installation extends the excitement surrounding Tate Modern‘s landmark exhibition beyond the gallery walls, inviting thousands of visitors to experience Kahlo’s extraordinary artistic legacy in the heart of Soho.

Carnaby Street Becomes a Living Canvas Inspired by Frida Kahlo
Designed to capture the bold spirit and unmistakable visual identity of Frida Kahlo, ¡Frida Icónica! transforms Carnaby Street into an open-air artwork filled with colour, symbolism and Mexican tradition.
Suspended above the street are cascading garlands of traditional papel picado, the intricate Mexican paper-cutting craft, specially created by artist Alejandra Ballesteros. The decorative banners feature imagery inspired by Kahlo’s life, paintings and personal symbolism, creating a striking canopy above visitors exploring Soho.
At the centre of the installation is a remarkable anamorphic mural created from four separate portraits by Kahlo and contemporary artists. Viewed from the correct position, the artwork aligns perfectly to reveal Kahlo’s instantly recognisable profile.
As daylight fades, the installation takes on a completely different atmosphere. Carefully designed lighting illuminates the artwork, celebrating themes central to Kahlo’s legacy, including colour, identity, Mexican heritage and queer expression.
Tate Modern Opens Its Biggest Pre-Selling Exhibition Ever
The installation arrives alongside the public opening of Frida: The Making of an Icon at Tate Modern on 25 June, which has already become the highest pre-selling exhibition in Tate’s history, with more than 50,000 tickets sold before opening.
The exhibition explores how Kahlo evolved from a relatively unknown Mexican painter into one of the most influential cultural figures of the twentieth century and beyond.
Visitors can discover more than 30 original works by Frida Kahlo, displayed alongside pieces by over 80 contemporary artists from around the world whose own practices have been shaped by her artistic style, personal story and cultural impact.
Rather than focusing solely on her paintings, the exhibition examines the creation of the Frida Kahlo phenomenon, exploring how her image, identity and artistic vision continue to inspire generations across art, fashion, politics and popular culture.

Bankside Murals Continue the Celebration
The celebration extends across London to Bankside, where six large-scale public murals have been unveiled as part of Beyond Boundaries, a collaboration between Better Bankside and Tate Collective.
Created by emerging artists aged under 25, the permanent artworks respond to different aspects of Kahlo’s remarkable life, exploring themes including feminism, disability, Mexican identity and queerness.
Installed across railway arches and public spaces, the murals are intended to remain in place for several years, encouraging new audiences to engage with art beyond traditional gallery spaces while highlighting the voices of a new generation of creatives.
Supported by Oxford Properties, the initiative reflects Tate Collective’s mission to connect young people with creativity and community through accessible public art.

Tate Modern Celebrates Frida Kahlo Across London
Speaking about the city-wide programme, Catherine Wood, Interim Director of Tate Modern, said:
“The extraordinary demand for Frida Kahlo is testament to the enduring power of her story and her work, which continues to resonate across cultures and communities, and inspire new generations of artists. Tate Modern is thrilled to be leading a summer-long programme across the city. Positioning Frida as an artist for 21st century London, we will offer audiences multiple entry points into her world from the intimate space of the gallery to the shared experience of the public realm.”
