Grand Hotel Fasano, Lake Garda Review – Classic Italian Luxury on the Water’s Edge

Historic Habsburg heritage, Michelin-starred dining and award-winning spa luxury on the shores of Lake Garda

Lake Garda has no need to announce itself: still water, mountain views, elegant lakeside towns and a particular northern Italian light that makes even an ordinary morning feel quite cinematic.

Grand Hotel Fasano fits naturally into this setting. It’s grand, but not in a loud or self-conscious way. Its luxury lies in the details: the warmth of the welcome, the rhythm of the day, the softness of the music at dinner, and the ease with which everything seems to happen.

Our team recently spent two nights at this historic lakeside hotel, discovering a property that combines old-world elegance with a fresh, contemporary approach to hospitality.

A Historic Hotel in One of Lake Garda’s Most Beautiful Settings

Grand Hotel Fasano sits directly on the shores of Lake Garda, in Gardone Riviera, surrounded by 12,000 square metres of palms, banana trees and Mediterranean planting.

The property was originally built as a hunting lodge for the Habsburg royal family and has since evolved into a five-star, family-owned hotel and member of The Leading Hotels of the World. It has 86 rooms and suites, spread across nine categories, with accommodation ranging from elegant standard rooms to spacious lake-view suites. Most rooms offer either full or partial views of Lake Garda, framing the water through tall windows or sunlit balconies.

The newest additions are the lake-view suites in the hotel’s recently unveiled Spa Wing, a dedicated space connected directly to Aqva Spa by lift. This is a clever expansion, particularly for guests who want wellness to sit at the centre of their stay without losing the classic atmosphere of the main hotel.

There is heritage here, but it is not heavy. Grand Hotel Fasano has the architecture and history of a grand European hotel, but the pace and comfort of a modern lakeside retreat.

First Impressions and Service

From arrival, the service stood out. Receptionists were smiley, warm and genuinely attentive.

Throughout the stay, the team were formal enough to make the experience feel special, but relaxed enough to make guests feel instantly comfortable. Whether by the pool, at breakfast, in the restaurants or around the terrace in the evening, service was consistently thoughtful and well judged.

The Atmosphere: Calm by Day, Elegant by Night

Grand Hotel Fasano has a lovely dual personality. During the day, the atmosphere is serene and unhurried. Guests read by the water, swim, drift between the pool and the lake, or settle into long lunches beneath the trees. Music plays softly in the background, present enough to create atmosphere but never intrusive.

In the evening, the mood becomes more sociable and refined. We enjoyed live piano from 9pm to 11pm, which added a gentle sense of occasion without taking over the room.

At 5pm, the champagne spray brought a little theatre to the day. It is a charming ritual, and a clever way of creating a shared moment without making anything feel forced. Grand Hotel Fasano is very good at this sort of thing!

The hotel is also dog-friendly, which we very much enjoyed!

Pool, Lake and Leisure

The lakeside setting is one of the hotel’s greatest strengths. There are ample sunbeds running along the perimeter, so the outdoor areas feel generous rather and never crowded during our stay. Guests can choose their own pace: poolside, garden-side, or right by the water.

The pier is a particular highlight, with beanbags and steps leading directly down into the lake. In the morning, the water can appear misty before gradually clearing to reveal the mountains beyond. It is one of the loveliest moments of the day.

For those who want to be more active, the hotel offers complimentary paddleboards and kayaks. During our mid-April stay, the water was still and inviting, ideal for a morning kayaking session. Gliding quietly across the surface gives you a different perspective of the hotel and the stunning landscape around it. We highly recommend this.

For guests keen to explore beyond the lake, Grand Hotel Fasano can also arrange curated experiences including wine and olive oil tastings at local estates, sailing, golf, and even helicopter tours over the Dolomites. It is very well placed for wider northern Italian itineraries, sitting between Venice and Milan, with Verona and the Dolomites within reach.

Another excellent detail is the QR code on the sunbeds, allowing guests to call a waiter directly.

Dining at Grand Hotel Fasano

Grand Hotel Fasano has a strong culinary offering, with several restaurants and bars across the property, including the Michelin-starred Il Fagiano, Il Pescatore, Magnolia, Bar La Terrazza and RAMAS Gin Lounge.

For 2026, the hotel has appointed Valerio Dallamano as Executive Chef of Magnolia and Osteria Il Pescatore. Born in Brescia, Dallamano trained in celebrated Michelin-starred kitchens across Italy and Europe and previously earned a Michelin star at Wistèria in Venice. His appointment marks a new chapter for the hotel’s dining programme, with menus that celebrate Lake Garda’s produce while bringing a more contemporary edge to regional cooking.

We dined at Il Pescatore on our first night. One of the most memorable starters was the oyster dish, served with smoked buffalo mozzarella, aromatic tomato, lardo and sea herbs. The richness of the mozzarella worked very well against the freshness of the oyster.

We then enjoyed the Spaghetti Martelli aglio, olio e peperoncino, which came with field chicory, shellfish, roasted cherry tomatoes and Garda olives. It was a clever version of a familiar classic. This was followed by Garronese veneta, a BBQ beef dish with macadamia oil, June plum, burnt potato with lemon verbena and chinotto concentrate – delicious!

Dessert was tiramisu, constructed beside our table, which was a great end to the evening, and of course, made the tiramisu taste all the better.

We also experienced the Michelin-starred Il Fagiano, where the cooking allowed for more unexpected global influences. Here, Asian and Indian notes appeared, such as a carrot wonton and pani puri. Sous chef Ivan has worked in Bangkok and India, and those experiences came through subtly in the flavour profiles.

Spa and Wellness

The hotel’s Aqva Spa has won awards for its excellence, which we believe is very well deserved. Recently renovated, it includes indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna, Turkish bath, ice pool, gym, treatment rooms and a peaceful spa garden by the lake. For 2026, the spa has also introduced seasonal treatment menus, reflecting the hotel’s continued investment in wellness.

The women-only spa time from 11am to 1pm is a particularly considerate touch, in an international hotel welcoming guests from many cultures.

Grand Hotel Fasano has also been recognised in The Luxury Spa Edit’s 2026 Global Spa Awards, with Aqva Spa shortlisted in both the Italy and Europe categories. It is easy to see why. The spa feels calm, well designed and properly integrated into the hotel experience.

The spa offers plenty of space to properly unwind, and gives the hotel strong appeal beyond the summer season.

The hotel reopened on 27 March 2026 and will remain open until 6 January 2027, including Christmas and New Year for the first time. This extended season gives guests the chance to experience Lake Garda outside the traditional summer months.

There will also be refreshed menus across the dining venues, a new beach bar, new meeting spaces, and the return of the Aperitivo d’Autore cultural programme. This series brings artists, writers, philosophers and collectors to the hotel for talks and aperitivo, adding a cultural layer to the lakeside experience.

Final Thoughts

Grand Hotel Fasano is a hotel that understands its strengths. It has a remarkable lakefront position, a rich history, excellent service, elegant dining and a calm but sociable atmosphere. It is luxurious without becoming cold, and traditional without being dated.

We found the perfect day to be: mornings by the lake, long afternoons in the sun, time in the spa, a kayak before aperitivo, dinner under soft lighting, and piano music to end the evening.

There is a lovely Italian phrase, fare le cose per bene – “to do things properly.” That is exactly what Grand Hotel Fasano does. It simply delivers, with grace, confidence and elegance.
