Nikon partners with the British Journal of Photography to launch the Female in Focus 2024 award

Nikon, in partnership with the British Journal of Photography, has announced that the Female in Focus award is back for its fifth edition, and entries are now open.

Five years ago, British Journal of Photography reported a startling statistic: only one in nine photography award winners were women (World Press Photo). This discovery sparked the creation of Female in Focus, an award launched in 2019 to confront gender inequality and celebrate women photographers making work across the globe. Today, this number has increased to just over 1 in 3, with 34% of major photography award winners over the past 5 years.

Awareness around gender inequality might be growing, but the numbers aren’t changing fast enough. According to a survey of over 1000 people in BJP’s audience, women working in the photography industry earn, on average, 30% less than their male counterparts. Additionally, 55% of these women had experienced gender discrimination in the workplace.

After a two-year hiatus, Female in Focus returns today with a landmark edition. For the first time, it partners with Nikon as its main sponsor, allowing the award to reach wider audiences than ever before.

The jury will select 20 single images and two series winners to be exhibited in a group show at 10.14 Gallery (London) and Glasgow’s Gallery of Photography. As part of the partnership with Nikon, the photographers of the two winning series will also receive a Z Series mirrorless camera, along with two NIKKOR Z lenses of their choice.

Plus, for the first time ever, the People’s Choice Award will allow the public to vote for their favourite image. The winning photographer will be featured in an interview in 1854.photography, discussing their work and creative practice.

The theme of this year’s edition is Renewal, delving into the transformative process of rejuvenation and rebirth. This theme captures the essence of starting anew, whether through personal growth, environmental restoration, or societal change. Through evocative imagery, it explores the beauty and strength found in moments of revival and regeneration, highlighting the hope and possibility inherent in beginning again.
