Latest Review – Hotel Stein, Salzburg

Located on the banks of the Salzach River and just steps away from the picturesque old town, right in the heart of Salzburg, the landmark Hotel Stein is probably the finest hotel to be found anywhere in the city, offering unparalleled customer service, luxury accommodation and breathtaking views from its award-winning rooftop bar.

Hotel Stein Exterior

Hotel Stein is officially the oldest hotel in Salzburg, with Medieval roots dating back to 1399. Formerly an inn during the Middle Ages the Stein has seen an awful lot of change over the centuries, but in recent years has been transformed into the luxury, adults only boutique design hotel we see today.

Following an extensive, two-year renovation, the 4-star, 56-room hotel reopened its doors in spring 2018, showcasing beautifully designed rooms and lounge spaces, a luxury spa area and enviable rooftop restaurant and bar, combining both modern and classical styles with Austrian and Venetian influences.

Hotel Stein Junior Suite

For our visit, we stayed in a Junior Suite on the 4th floor. The first thing you notice when entering is how bright and spacious the room is, with those vibrant blue and yellow tones again standing out against the clean white ceilings and bed sheets.

Included in the room is a retro espresso maker with coffee pods and an assortment of premium teas by Kusmi Paris. Tech-wise, the room includes a large Philips flat screen TV with infotainment system and digital guest folder, as well as a large laptop safe, with complimentary Wi-fi available for all guests.

The large bathroom features a good-sized walk-in rain shower with high-quality natural cosmetics by the Saint Charles Apothecary. Bathrobes and slippers are also included in the wardrobe.

Everything feels very stylish, elegant and charming, which feels very much in-keeping with the overall feel and style of the hotel.

Hotel Stein Breakfast

Breakfast is served from 7am to 11am in the award-winning Steinterrasse rooftop restaurant and bar, up on the seventh floor, and offers a superb buffet breakfast with freshly prepared à la carte options also available to order. There is ample seating inside and around the buffet area, though during the warmer months guests can sit out on the terrace and enjoy breakfast with those stunning panoramic views. The breakfast buffet offers a great choice of continental options including traditional Austrian and German salads and meats, as well as cheeses, pastries, freshly baked artisan breads, and complimentary prosecco!

The Steinterrasse restaurant is also open for lunch and dinner offering a range of high quality options and local specialty dishes. Booking is advised as it can get very busy at peak times, and when the weather is nice.

Hotel Stein Lounge

The hotel is awash with vibrant designs and bold touches that extend throughout the hotel. From the eye-popping yellows and blues featured in the lounge and guest rooms (as pictured, above) to the elegant designs of the landings and corridors and the ultra-modern style of the restaurant – not to mention the original Venetian glass work – everything about the guest experience feels luxury.

As well as the rooftop bar and restaurant, the hotel is also home to a spa and relaxation area, where guests can warm up and detoxify in the sauna or work out in the gym. Guests can also visit the hotel shop on the ground floor to purchase branded gifts and stock up on luxury Saint Charles Apothecary toiletries and Kusmi teas.

Hotel Stein Rooftop View

Hotel Stein is located right in the heart of the historic Old Town of Salzburg, with many attractions within walking distance. Just a short walk across the bridge brings you directly to the Altstadt, or the Historic Centre of the City of Salzburg, where you can explore the likes of Mozart’s birthplace (Mozarts Geburtshaus), Hohensalzburg Fortress (Festung Hohensalzburg), St Peter’s Abbey and Cemetery, Residenzplatz square, and many other key landmarks and attractions.

The hotel is a short 5-minute bus/trolley ride from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof train station, or a 25-30 minute walk if you are feeling up to it, as well as a 15-minute trolley-bus ride from Salzburg Airport W. A. Mozart, which will drop you off just a short walk from the hotel, outside the Old Town.
