Latest Review – Hilton Vienna Plaza, Vienna

Located in a prime spot on the prestigious Ringstrasse boulevard, the 5.3km ring road that circles the historic Inner Town of Vienna, the striking Hilton Vienna Plaza is a richly-designed Art Deco gem inspired by the Golden Age of the Roaring Twenties, blending traditional elements with a contemporary twist for a memorable and luxury stay in the grand Austrian capital.

Hilton Vienna Plaza Balcony View

Hilton Vienna Plaza opened its doors in 1988 as the first design hotel in the city, on the former site of the historic Hotel Austria, which was built for the 1873 Vienna World’s Fair. The hotel was later converted into police headquarters in 1875 before being completely burned to the ground in the latter stages of World War II, with the ruins eventually blown up.

With the ground remaining vacant for more than forty years, Conrad Hilton began development on the current hotel in 1986, with designs by architect Kurt Hlaveniczka. The hotel underwent a major nine-month refurbishment in 2014 – ahead of the 150th anniversary of the Ringstrasse in 2015 – and celebrated its landmark 35th anniversary in 2023.

Now, thirty-six years on from its ceremonious opening, the 254-room property is amongst the finest and most beautifully rendered hotels in Vienna, boasting state-of-the-art designs and facilities, an award-winning restaurant, and situated just a short walk away from some of the city’s most celebrated landmarks and attractions.

Hilton Vienna Plaza Executive Suite

For our visit, we stayed in a Penthouse Executive Room on the top floor, offering amazing views over the Ringstrasse and across the city rooftops. The suite itself wasn’t overly large – even for a an Executive Room/Suite – but certainly big enough, with generous storage space – two double wardrobes, in fact – a large bathroom, with walk in shower, and a luxury private balcony, for that added touch of class.

The room was incredibly cosy with a comfortable Hilton Serenity Bed, soft, down pillows and thick blackout curtains to ensure a good night’s rest. The room was also very well soundproofed and didn’t let in any noise from the adjacent Ringstrasse, despite the balcony and patio doors.

There were plenty of plug sockets in the room, though only one USB port on one side of the bed, so make sure to pack some travel adapters. The room also included a laptop size safe, fridge, hairdryer, and tea and coffee making facilities. There was also a Work Desk with Adjustable Lamp and a good-sized 55 Inch Flat Panel HD Television. High-speed Wi-fi is available in all guest rooms and communal areas.

All in all, a lovely room with luxury touches that continues the Art Nouveau theme that runs throughout the hotel.

Hilton Vienna Plaza Bathroom

The marble bathroom was clean, spacious and very nicely decorated, with a big, walk-in power shower and Crabtree and Evelyn soaps, lotions and shower gels for that added high-end touch.

One particularly fun addition is the speakers dotted around the bathroom, which relay the audio from the TV in the bedroom, allowing you to continue listening to the TV or Radio whilst getting ready.

Hilton Vienna Plaza Emile

The hotel is home to the amazing ÉMILE Restaurant and Bar, which serves up traditional Austrian and international dishes with a twist in a gold and mahogany 1920s-inspired setting. Guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as signature cocktails, local wines and vintage champagne from the bar throughout the day and late into the night.

ÉMILE occupies two floors but tends to just open the upper bar area during midweek and off-peak times.

For our meal, we started with the Buffalo Mozzarella and the Sweet Potato Coconut Soup. The Mozzarella is presented as a full ball of rich, creamy Burrata, served with a medley of Dried Tomatoes, a Tomato Shallot Salad, and topped with two criss-crossed Grissini and edible flowers. The soup is full-flavoured with a good hit of coconut, and garnished with Cilantro Oil, Sweet Potato Tartar and Chive Cream.

For the mains, we both opted for burgers: the “Can’t hendl it” Chicken Burger and the vegan Sweet Potato Falafel Burger. “Can’t hendl it” is a fun take on the traditional Vienese classic, Backhendl (Fried breaded chicken),  serving up a crispy Buttermilk Chicken Thigh in a spicy Red Brioche Bun and topped with Buttermilk Teriyaki Sauce, Panko, and Chili Mayonnaise. The burger is served with Sesame Coleslaw and Asian salad mix for a fun fusion twist on the local classic. The Sweet Potato Falafel Burger features a filling and meaty Sweet Potato and Falafel Patty served in a Wholegrain Bun with Guacamole, Tomato Jam, Spinach Salad, and creamy garlicky Aioli to garnish.

For dessert, it could only be one thing: Apple Strudel; the traditional Viennese classic served with warm Bourbon Vanilla Sauce, and yes, Vanilla Sauce, never custard! The Strudel is perfect, as you might expect. Crisp, golden filo pastry bursting with sweet apple, raisins and breadcrumbs topped with fragrant cinnamon and brown sugar sweet with that rich molasses.

Washed down with a specialty Wiener Melange coffee, it was the perfect end to a perfect meal.

Hilton Vienna Plaza Breakfast

Breakfast is served in the downstairs section and offers an excellent continental buffet breakfast with various breads, pastries, meats, cheeses and salad options, as well as a cooked breakfast selection and an À la carte menu for fresh eggs prepared to your liking.

Fresh juices are available as well as fresh coffee and a variety of different teas, served up in Japanese-style cast iron tea pots and cups.

ÉMILE Restaurant and Bar is open Monday to Sunday from 7:00am to 1:00am, with the kitchen open until 10:30pm. Booking is recommended during weekends and peak times.

Hilton Vienna Plaza Foyer

With its elegant black and gold Art Deco interiors and striking black and white marble-floored foyer, everything about Hilton Vienna Plaza oozes class and sophistication. The rooms are clean and elegant, yet still retain that vintage touch, the bathrooms incredibly modern, the bar and restaurant areas refined and stylish with the dark woods and gold finishes.

The hotel may have been refurbished over the years, but it was developed as the first design hotel in the city and still very much retains that stylish, high-class ambience and feel.

In terms of amenities and facilities, the hotel boasts nine versatile and state-of-the-art meeting rooms – all named after different dance styles – making it a perfect venue for staging exclusive, small and medium-sized meetings, conferences and events, as well as an impressive Gym and Spa Suite, which extends across three floors and includes a Finnish sauna, bio-sauna and relaxation zone.

The hotel also has an Executive Lounge offering breakfast, snacks and drinks throughout the day, including a Happy Hour from 5-7pm which a hot buffet and complimentary beers and wine.

Hilton Vienna Plaza is located right on the exclusive Ringstrasse in the heart of the city, just a 20-minute taxi ride from Vienna International Airport (Flughafen Wien-Schwechat), and steps away from Börse tram stop and two major underground lines.

From the airport, we took the City Airport Train (CAT), which connects the airport non-stop with the transport hub at Wien Mitte in just 16 minutes, then got the underground to Schottenring, followed by a 10-minute walk to the hotel.

The hotel really does have an ideal location for exploring the city, and a 20-30 minute stroll along the Ringstrasse will take you directly to some of the city’s top landmarks and architectural masterpieces, including the Imperial Palace, the Austrian Parliament Building, the Vienna State Opera, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, and City Hall.

Hilton Vienna Plaza Executive Lounge

An exceptional hotel right in the heart of the city and close to many of the top landmarks and attractions. The Art Deco designs are beautifully rendered and the staff are all incredibly welcoming, friendly and helpful. A really lovely place to stay if you are visiting Vienna. Special mention to Celine, Mateusz and Ricard for their outstanding customer service and warm, friendly manner throughout the stay.
