Grange Park Opera announces 2019 Season at West Horsley Place

Grange Park Opera has announced details for its upcoming 2019 Season, which opens on 6 June 2019 with its critically-acclaimed production of Verdi’s Don Carlo, an intense and powerful tale of love, ambition and political intrigue in 16th-century Spain.

Conducted by Gianluca Marciano and directed by Jo Davies, the production stars Leonardo Capalbo as Don Carlo, Marina Costa-Jackson as Elisabetta, and Clive Bayley as Philip II.

Don Carlo is followed by Engelbert Humperdinck‘s dark and enchanting Hansel and Gretel, based on the unsettling fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm.

Directed by Stephen Medcalf, the female-led cast includes Caitlin Hulcup (Hansel), Soraya Mafi (Gretel) and Susan Bullock (Witch / Mother). George Jackson will be conducting the Orchestra of English National Opera.

Finally, Jean-Pierre van der Spuy will direct George Gershwin’s landmark 20th century masterpiece, Porgy & Bess, starring Musa Ngqungwana as Porgy and Laquita Mitchell as Bess.

Porgy & Bess is designed by Francis O’Connor and Stephen Barlow conducts the BBC Concert Orchestra.

Alongside the main season, Grange Park Opera will also welcome one of the world’s leading opera stars, Joyce DiDonato, for  a special, one-night-only concert on 11 July 2019.

The concert will see the celebrated lyric-coloratura mezzo-soprano perform a programme of arias from her wide-ranging repertoire.

The productions will be performed within the magical setting of The Theatre in the Woods at West Horsley Place, a beautiful, five-tiered opera house inspired by Milan’s iconic La Scala.
