The Folio Society & House of Illustration announce ‘Book Illustration Competition 2019’ long-list

The Folio Society and House of Illustration have today announced the 2019 long-list for the ninth annual Book Illustration Competition (#BIC2019)

The winner of this year’s competition will receive a prestigious £5,000 commission from The Folio Society to illustrate their new edition of Diana Wynne Jones’s Howl’s Moving Castle. Five other shortlisted entrants will each receive £500.

As selected by Sheri Gee, Art Director at The Folio Society, and Colin McKenzie, Director of House of Illustration, the 25 long-listed artists are: Ehsan Abarghouei (Tehran, Iran), Emily Altman (Edinburgh, UK), Julia Bernhard (Mainz, Germany), Cathy Brett (Leatherhead, UK), Janelle Carbajal (California, USA), Lulu Chen (Taitung City, Taiwan), Kateřina Čupová (Dobratice, Czech Republic), Iona Darroch (Worcester, UK), Alejo and Vivian de los Rios (Marietta, GA, USA), Kring Demetrio (Cebu City, Philippines), Rebecca Dennis (Boughton Under-Blean, UK), Marina Evlanova (Moscow, Russia), Jorge Garcia (London, UK), Marie-Alice Harel (Edinburgh, UK), Sija Hong (Brooklyn, USA), Dean Lewis (Newport, UK), Yijing Li (UK), Joseph Lillington (Bristol, UK), Erika Meza (Nottingham, UK), Alex Moore (London, UK), Junli Song (Oak Park, Illinois, USA), Anna Wojtcz (Gniezno, Poland), Harry Woodgate (St Albans, UK), Tania Yakunova (Kiev, Ukraine), and Vikki Zhang (New York, USA).

The shortlist and the winner will be selected from the longlist by Laura Cecil, literary agent for Diana Wynne Jones; Sheri Gee, Art Director and Sophie Lewis, Editor (both from The Folio Society); Colin McKenzie, Director and Olivia Ahmad, Curator (both from House of Illustration), and Max Löffler, winner of the Book Illustration Competition 2018.

The awards will be announced at an exclusive ceremony at House of illustration on 26 February 2019.
