A new trailer for Stanley Kubrick’s spectacular 2001: A Space Odyssey, commissioned by the BFI and Warner Bros., is released online today, Tuesday 21 October, and will be on cinema screens across the UK from Friday.

The trailer, the first for this title in four decades, was created by Ignition Creative London with the aim of reaching a new generation of cinema-goers who have never experienced the film on the big screen.

Taking HAL as its central character, Ignition has created a powerful and eerie tease, which Jan Harlan, Kubrick’s executive producer, has said is: “the best trailer for this film I have ever seen! To use HAL’s voice is brilliant”.

2001: A Space Odyssey is released by the BFI, in a 2K digital transfer from Warner Bros., to UK cinemas on 28th November as part of the BFI’s UK-wide season Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder, which opens today.

The film’s stars Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood will join Professor Brian Cox and Sir Christopher Frayling for a panel discussion chaired by critic Matthew Sweet, at the BFI Southbank on 30th November.

With a screenplay co-written by Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke and developed concurrently alongside Clarke’s novel of the same name, 2001: A Space Odyssey was recently voted No. 1 in a Time Out, London poll for the best 100 Sci-Fi films. Critic Roger Ebert described Kubrick’s masterpiece as ‘a stand-alone monument, a great visionary leap, unsurpassed in its vision of man and the universe’.

Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder will be presented over three months (October – December 2014) with a historical and thematic exploration of the best of this perennially popular and visionary genre. The nationwide release of 2001: A Space Odyssey will be a highlight of the programme.
