Royal Shakespeare Company joins forces with Opus Arte for Live from Stratford-upon-Avon releases

Royal Shakespeare Company joins forces with Opus Arte for DVD and Blu-ray releases of their Live from Stratford-upon-Avon series

The Opus Arte label is universally renowned for releasing some of the world’s finest live Opera, Ballet and Theatre productions on DVD and Blu-ray, and the label is delighted to introduce acclaimed titles from the Royal Shakespeare Company to its roster. The Opus Arte label is affiliated with the Royal Opera House, and this new venture with the RSC marks a collaboration between two giants of the UK Arts scene.

The first release in the series is the recent and hugely successful production of Richard II, directed by RSC Artistic Director Gregory Doran, with David Tennant in the title role. Tennant is joined by Oliver Ford Davies as the Duke of York, Michael Pennington as John of Gaunt and Nigel Lindsay as Bolingbroke. The critically acclaimed production was the first show in Gregory Doran’s six-year plan to present all of Shakespeare’s works.

This production was broadcast live on 13 November 2013 from the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon to over 100 cinemas around the UK, whilst also being available in North America, Australia, Japan and Northern Europe.

“The chance to work with such a world-renowned institution as the Royal Shakespeare Company is a privilege and an exciting challenge.  It further marks Opus Arte’s expansion beyond opera and ballet, with this new partnership perfectly complementing our existing relationships with Glyndebourne and the Royal Opera House” said Ben Pateman, Opus Arte Executive Producer. Gregory Doran adds “I am very pleased that Richard II, the first of our productions to be broadcast Live From Stratford-upon-Avon, is now available on DVD and Blu-ray.  As we work our way through the canon of Shakespeare’s plays over the next 6 years we hope these recordings will build up to a substantial library.”

Richard II will be available on DVD, Blu-ray and also on iTunes from Tuesday 6 May 2014.

The DVD extras includes a commentary by Director Gregory Doran and Live from Stratford-upon-Avon Producer John Wyver. The Blu-ray disc also includes an additional interview with David Tennant in which he discusses his thoughts on the play and the character of Richard, and a film exploring behind the scenes of the production, giving an insight into the process of putting the play onto the stage at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the logistics of filming the production for live broadcast.
