Originally beginning life as a rock opera concept album, released in 1976 (featuring the voices of Julie Covington, Colm Wilkinson, Barbara Dickson, Paul Jones and Tony Christie), Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s ambitious musical study of the life of Argentine political leader Eva Perón (the second wife of Argentine president Juan Perón) first opened at London’s Prince Edward Theatre on 21 June 1978, starring Elaine Paige, David Essex and Joss Ackland in the show’s central roles, and ran for 3,176 performances, before eventually closing on 18 February 1986.
