Considered by American writer and Nobel Prize laureate William Faulkner to be the finest of all screen adaptations of his work, Douglas Sirk’s bleak and pessimistic 1957 melodrama, ‘The Tarnished Angels’, adapted from Faulkner’s 1935 novel ‘Pylon’ by American screenwriter and novelist George Zuckerman (with whom Sirk had collaborated on the previous year’s ‘Written on the Wind’), is often stated to be one of the director’s most personal and “most cherished passion projects”.
